The Yale women’s basketball team secured a 63-49 victory over the University of New Haven on Monday night at the Hazell Center. The Bulldogs used a decisive 15-0 run in the third quarter to take control of the game, turning a one-point deficit into a 14-point lead.
At halftime, the teams were tied at 28. Yale outscored New Haven 22-7 in the third quarter, with four different players contributing during their key scoring run. During this stretch, Yale made seven of eleven shots while holding New Haven scoreless on six attempts.
Sophomore guard Marisa Chapman recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ciniya Moore led all scorers with a career-high 23 points. Senior forward Kiley Capstraw and Chapman each had five assists, while first-year forward Dorka Kastl led the team with three blocks and added seven rebounds.
Yale’s win marks its largest margin of victory since defeating Dartmouth by 17 points in February. The Bulldogs have now won three consecutive games and four out of their last five, improving their record to 4-7 for the season.
Head coach Dalila Eshe commented on having multiple players contribute offensively: “Once we settled in, we found our rhythm versus their zone. We put some people in positions they don’t normally play, and that opened up the floor for us to have some equal-opportunity offense.”
On Moore’s performance, Eshe said: “We thought she would have a good game, knowing they play zone. In addition to her outside shooting, she got some really good shots going downhill.”
Eshe also addressed the team’s recent success: “So much of it was about us gelling at the right time. We had two pretty hard games in the middle of November, and not having Kiley for two games hurt as well. So November felt a little out of sorts. This [winning streak] is just about finding our rhythm and our chemistry.”
Yale will next face Monmouth on Thursday, December 18.
