The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) is set to host its 115th annual Plant Science Day on August 6, 2025. The event will take place at Lockwood Farm in Hamden, Connecticut, and is open to the public free of charge. It will proceed regardless of weather conditions.
The event will feature updates on CAES’s research in agriculture, food safety, the environment, forestry, and public health. Highlights include the presentation of the Century Farm Award to Rosedale Farms and Vineyards from Simsbury, Connecticut. The Samuel W. Johnson Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Scott Chaskey from Peconic Land Trust at Quail Hill Farm, NY. His lecture is titled “Cultivation and Kinship in the Web of Life.”
CAES scientists will present on topics such as “Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) – an Emerging Issue in Connecticut and Beyond,” “Managing Apple Diseases in a Sustainable Manner: From Biological Controls to Disease Resistance in the Hosts,” and “Managing Milkweed Habitat to Support Monarch Butterfly Success.”
The day also includes technical demonstrations like “Invasive Plant Management Options for Homeowners” and “DIY Propagation Station: Cut, Dip, and Stick!” Attendees can engage with CAES scientists through informal discussions on various scientific topics. Field plots, exhibits, activities for children including the “Passport for Kids” program are available.
Experts from CAES will offer plant disease diagnosis, plant identification services, insect and weed identification, soil sample collection for testing, and provide Connecticut pesticide credits.
