Kalus Murphy has been appointed as the new assistant coach for the Yale Bulldogs football team, where he will oversee the cornerbacks, according to an April 10 announcement by Kevin Cahill, Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football.
The addition of Murphy is seen as a move to strengthen both the athletic and academic standards of the program. The appointment highlights Yale’s ongoing commitment to maintaining its tradition of excellence on and off the field.
Cahill said, “Yale Football is built on a winning tradition and a commitment to striving for daily improvement; Kalus [Murphy] embodies those exact qualities. We are excited to bring Kalus’s personality and drive to our staff. He will be a tremendous asset to our program, both on and off the field.”
Murphy arrives at Yale from North Central College, where he worked with safeties and took part in recruiting coordination. During his time there, he helped develop defensive backs such as Julian Bell and Brayden Garrigan—both earning D3football.com All-Region honors—with Bell also being recognized as an All-American by D3football.com and Associated Press.
“Yale’s athletic and academic commitment to excellence, legacy, and tradition are unparalleled,” Murphy said. “I’m honored to join a program that develops elite competitors and exceptional scholars, and I am ready to get to work.”
Before joining North Central College, Murphy coached quarterbacks at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after playing three seasons in that position himself for RPI’s Engineers. He also served as a defensive intern at University at Albany coaching safeties.
In 2022, Murphy was selected for the National Football League Bill Walsh Fellowship where he interned with the Baltimore Ravens’ quarterbacks group.
Looking ahead, Murphy’s experience across multiple collegiate programs—and exposure in an NFL environment—is expected to contribute positively toward developing Yale’s cornerbacks unit.
