Quinnipiac falls to ETSU Buccaneers in series finale

The Quinnipiac Bobcats lost the final game of their baseball series against East Tennessee State University (ETSU) with a score of 16-5 in Johnson City, Tennessee. The defeat drops the Bobcats’ season record to 2-7, while ETSU improves to 9-2.

Quinnipiac started strong in the first inning, scoring three runs. Peyton Vancas reached base on a throwing error, allowing Caden Williamson and Alexi Irizarry to score. Jack Balcer later scored on a sacrifice fly by Chase Camac, giving the Bobcats an early 3-0 lead.

ETSU responded by scoring four consecutive runs over the next innings, taking a 4-3 lead into the sixth. James Marino tied the game at four for Quinnipiac with his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning. ETSU regained the lead in the bottom half of that inning.

Peyton Vancas tied it again for Quinnipiac with his first home run as a Bobcat, making it 5-5. However, ETSU broke open the game late, scoring eight runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to secure a win after eight innings.

Five different players from Quinnipiac recorded hits during the game. Alex Irizarry had two hits and now has a .286 batting average for the season. Peyton Vancas drove in two runs, bringing his total RBIs to seven so far this year. Both James Marino and Peyton Vancas hit their first home runs of this season.

Andrew Rubayo started as pitcher for Quinnipiac and threw five innings with three strikeouts. Mike Poncini came on in relief for 3.2 innings, striking out two batters but allowing three earned runs.

The Bobcats will play their next series against UNC Greensboro starting Friday, March 6th at 3 PM.
