Rosa DeLauro, U.S. Congresswoman representing Connecticut’s 3rd district since 1991, has used her social media platform to address issues ranging from gun violence to student loan repayment and food assistance programs.
On July 20, 2025, DeLauro reflected on the anniversary of a mass shooting, stating: “Today marks 13 years since the Aurora movie theater shooting, where twelve people lost their lives. Holding victims in our thoughts and prayers isn’t enough. We must pass common sense gun legislation to put an end to the gun violence epidemic once and for all.”
The following day, she commented on changes to federal student loan policy: “Income driven repayment plans help borrowers manage student loan costs. Suspending them during a cost-of-living crisis makes no sense. The Trump Administration is making life more expensive for hardworking Americans.”
Later that same day, DeLauro criticized recent legislative efforts affecting food assistance organizations: “Republicans’ Big Ugly Law defunds & destroys food assistance organizations that fight against hunger like @CTFoodshare. Instead of supporting families during the cost-of-living crisis, Republicans are ripping food from people’s mouths to pay for tax breaks for the wealthiest.”
DeLauro was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1943 and continues to reside there at age 80. She graduated from Marymount College in Tarrytown with a BA in 1964.
Her recent statements come amid ongoing national debates about gun control measures following high-profile shootings, shifting federal policies on student loans during periods of economic uncertainty, and proposed changes to nutrition assistance funding as part of broader fiscal negotiations.
