Rosa DeLauro, U.S. Congresswoman representing Connecticut’s 3rd district since 1991, marked the third anniversary of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and criticized delays in food aid distribution in a series of posts on July 16, 2025.
In her first post of the day, DeLauro stated, “Today, we recognize the 3rd anniversary of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. I’m proud to have funded this vital mental health resource. If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. Call or text 988 for 24/7 compassionate support.” (July 16, 2025). The congresswoman emphasized her involvement in funding this national mental health service.
Later that afternoon, she turned attention to issues with food aid distribution under the previous administration: “500 metric tons of life-saving food, enough to feed 1.5M kids for a week, is about to be incinerated because the Trump Admin let it sit and rot. While children starve, they are setting your tax dollars on fire.” (July 16, 2025).
DeLauro continued criticism in a subsequent post: “A month after the Secretary of State promised to move stalled USAID programs appropriated by Congress, food for starving children is still rotting and taxpayer dollars are being wasted.” (July 16, 2025).
DeLauro was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1943 and continues to reside there at age eighty. She graduated from Marymount College in Tarrytown with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964.
Her remarks come amid ongoing public scrutiny over government efficiency in distributing humanitarian aid and increasing awareness around accessible mental health resources like the federally supported lifeline.
