New Haven, CT – August 25th, 2022 – The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Annual Policy Summit and Summer Bash, presented by Bank of America, on Tuesday, August 30th from 3pm to 6pm at Hotel Marcel (500 Sargent Dr, New Haven, CT 06511). The two-part event will cover an array of panels focused on solving workforce challenges, as well as the attraction and retention of employees, followed by a summer gathering with live music.
“Many of our Chamber businesses have taken new approaches to address workforce shortages. During the Policy Summit, we will work to address the new workforce alongside our business community and industry leaders including new strategies to find and retain employees, the role of regional sector partnerships, and how to make New Haven an attractive destination for young and diverse people. Following our Summit, we will also celebrate the end of summer with our Summer Bash featuring networking and live music at the Hotel Marcel,” said Garrett Sheehan, President & CEO of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce.
The event will take place at the landmark building, the new Hotel Marcel, which is the first fossil fuel-free hotel in the country. Beer, wine, and the “Summer Bash” signature cocktail will be available at the Summer Bash portion of the event. Live entertainment will also be provided by Velez and His Band who frequently play at El Segundo and are scheduled to perform for the International Festival of Arts and Ideas.
The event will focus on the topic, “Rethinking the New Workforce: Strengthening our Talent Advantage to Drive Regional Economic Growth. To begin the program, William Villano, President & CEO of Workforce Alliance, and Kelli-Marie Vallieres, the State’s Chief Workforce Officer, Commissioner for the State’s Office of Workforce Strategy, and Vice Chair of the Governor’s Workforce Council will provide opening remarks discussing “The State of the Workforce: Where is the Talent?”
The first panel will include Erika Smith, CEO of ReNetX Bio, Asi Carmeli, Director of Human Resources for Hobson & Motzer, and Andrea Lobo, Chief Human Resources Officer at Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center to discuss “Regional Sector Partnerships: Business-Led Approaches to Solving Workforce Challenges.” Panelists will provide insight into the strong early returns that have already surfaced as a result of the regional sector partnerships. Panelists will also provide an understanding of how business leaders in other industries can take the lead in addressing the workforce through collaboration between industry leaders, building a talent pipeline, and university partnerships.
The second panel will discuss “Retaining a Young & Diverse Workforce,” and includes Adriane Jefferson, Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of New Haven, Patricia Melton, President of New Haven Promise, Genevive Walker, President & CEO of ConnCAT, and Jhonnathan Rivera, Co-Founder and Communications Director for Puerto Ricans United. Panelists will discuss how businesses can work to attract and retain a young and diverse workforce. A multitude of solutions will be examined including making sure the region’s culture reflects the diversity of those who live in the region and leveraging the programs in place that support the talent pipeline of young people.
Dorinda Manner, Vice President of Talent Acquisition & Development for Yale New Haven Health, Mauri Quinn, Vice President of Human Resources for PhysicianOne Urgent Care, and Marcia LaFemina, President of Penn Globe will join the final panel to discuss “New Strategies to Find and Retain Workers.” Panelists will discuss the new strategies they have implemented, innovative partnerships, and tips on how to attract and retain employees. New strategies will assist employers in appealing to the workforce and creating a pipeline of talent.
Regional colleges and universities will also share remarks on how they are working to prepare the workforce of tomorrow and further strengthening the region’s talent advantage. These universities include Albertus Magnus College, Gateway Community College, Southern Connecticut State University, Quinnipiac University, University of New Haven, and Yale University.
