The Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) is developing a data science and data equity (DSDE) program aimed at transforming public health research through data science discoveries and equitable implementation. This initiative seeks to provide data analysts with collaborative career paths in academic public health, while equipping future leaders with essential data science skills.

Dr. Bhramar Mukherjee, PhD, who leads the DSDE initiative, emphasized the importance of health equity: “Health equity refers to the principle that all individuals should have the opportunity to attain their highest level of health.” She further explained that "data equity represents an ethos where all individuals in the world should benefit equally from data science innovations and products."

Dean Megan L. Ranney, MD, MPH, has identified data-driven leadership as crucial for public health's future. Dr. Mukherjee noted, “Our team is excited to be part of this school-wide, strategic vision.”

The program includes plans for a Data Services Enclave offering services like data cleaning and AI assistance. Mukherjee envisions a community of well-paid DSDE analysts sharing best practices.

In September, YSPH appointed a DSDE task force comprising members from various departments at Yale. The task force focuses on ensuring equitable practice in data science and driving fair decisions.

“This is a defining moment for data science,” said Mukherjee. A Congressional bill proposes grants for data literacy education, and President Biden signed an executive order on AI use.

Mukherjee warned against biased AI models: “Biased data collection... can result in harmful and incorrect conclusions.” She highlighted four core areas for DSDE: representative data collection, studying underrepresented populations, best practices in analysis, and algorithmic fairness.

DSDE aims to elevate public health training by investing in educational programming, services and resources support, community outreach initiatives, and innovative research methods.

Dr. Bhramar Mukherjee joined YSPH as Senior Associate Dean of Public Health Data Science and Data Equity on August 1, 2024. Her work integrates genetic, environmental, and healthcare data with a focus on cancer research among other areas.
