Yale University’s baseball team secured a 10-8 win over Pepperdine on Sunday in Malibu, California, clinching the three-game series. The Bulldogs improved their season record to 3-3 after coming from behind late in the game.
Sophomore Owen Turner delivered the decisive hit in the top of the ninth inning, driving in two runs and breaking an 8-8 tie. Teo Spadaccini earned his first win of the season by pitching 1.1 scoreless innings in relief to close out the game.
Jack Dauer contributed significantly for Yale, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. In the fifth inning, Yale scored six runs following singles by Bryce Miller and Jackson Hays, along with defensive errors by Pepperdine. Chris DiPrima added an RBI single during this rally.
Pepperdine responded with five runs in their half of the fifth inning to narrow Yale’s lead. Dauer drove in another run for Yale in the seventh before Pepperdine took its first lead with three runs later that inning.
In the eighth, pinch hitter Matt Hutchinson singled in his first collegiate at-bat, helping Yale tie the game at eight apiece when Garrett Larsen drove home Colin Sloan.
The ninth inning saw Dauer, Davis Hanson, and Miller reach base after being hit by pitches consecutively. Turner then singled to center field to bring home Dauer and Hanson for what would be the final margin.
“With one out in the ninth, Dauer, Davis Hanson, and Miller were hit by pitches in three consecutive at-bats. With the bases loaded, Turner lined a single to center, scoring Dauer and Hanson and giving the Bulldogs the go-ahead runs,” according to a summary provided by Yale Athletics.
Daniel Cohen started on the mound for Yale and allowed three earned runs over 4.1 innings before being relieved by Brett Faccio, Tate Evans, and Spadaccini.
The weekend marked Yale’s first-ever series against Pepperdine; they finished it with a 2-1 record over their opponent. Bryce Miller posted strong numbers across all games played during this series while Hutchinson made his collegiate debut as a pinch hitter.
Yale is scheduled to host Manhattan College on Wednesday, March 4 at 3 p.m.
