Yale fencers earn multiple top-eight finishes at NCAA Northeast Regionals

Select members of Yale University’s men’s and women’s fencing teams participated in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Vassar College on Sunday. Among the competitors, first-year student Sophie Liu secured first place in the saber event.

A total of nine women from Yale took part in the regional tournament. Kristina Petrova finished fifth and Jia Chen finished seventh in the foil category, both placing among the top eight along with Liu.

On the men’s team, 12 athletes competed, with four achieving top-eight finishes: Vinni Yu placed fourth, Yonjae Kim was fifth, Castor Kao took sixth, and Nicholas Kim finished eighth—all in foil.

Those who qualify from this event will advance to compete at the 2026 NCAA Fencing Championships in South Bend, Indiana. The selections for qualification are scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, March 10. The national championship is set to take place from Thursday, March 19 through Sunday, March 22.
