Senior Owen Karas set a new school record in the 5,000 meters as the Yale men’s track and field team began its indoor season with eight event wins. Karas competed at Boston University’s Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, where he finished with a time of 13:51.46, surpassing his previous school record of 13:53.27 from last year. Kenan Pala also competed at the event, achieving a personal best of 14:11.30 and moving into sixth place on Yale’s all-time list.
While Karas and Pala were in Boston, the rest of the Bulldogs participated in the Yale Season Opener at Coxe Cage in New Haven. The meet included several local schools, and Yale athletes secured victories across multiple events.
In distance races, Lucas Cohen (8:27.33) and Guy Stevens (8:28.37) finished first and second respectively in the 3,000 meters. Tanish Chettiar won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:32.76, while Connor Hom took first place in the mile at 4:20.89.
In sprints, team captain Andrew Farr recorded a personal best of 6.69 seconds to win the 60 meters—just one hundredth of a second off the school record set by Trenton Charles in 2022. First-year athlete Jozef Miesak placed third with a time of 6.92 seconds. In the 400 meters, Otis Irwin (48.19) won ahead of teammate Finnegan Quinn (49.28).
In field events, Brian Di Bassinga claimed victory in the triple jump with a mark of 15.18 meters; only Matthew Steele from New Haven came within a meter of his result.
Nolan Recker led Yale’s performance in throws by winning the weight throw with a distance of 20.66 meters—just short of his own school record—and was joined by teammates Jake Sun (third), Chu Anueyiagu (fourth), and Nathan Lebowitz (sixth) among the top finishers in that event. Alexander Johnson debuted for Yale by winning the shot put with a throw of 14.87 meters.
The Bulldogs’ relay team—composed of Ethan Johnson, Lucas Mylon, Jozef Miesak, and Andrew Farr—finished second in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 3:18.23.
