• Colder weather can cause more severe symptoms in asthma sufferers.
• Allergy triggers can also set off asthma attacks.
• Undergoing allergy treatment can help reduce asthma symptoms.
As the winter months continue to keep the rush of cold weather flowing, Dr. Robert Weiss of CT ENT Sinus Center points out that patients struggling with chronic sinus problems often have the dual issue of asthma as well.
"If you've got any allergies or sinus or nasal problems, don't accept them as status quo,” Weiss told SC Connecticut News. “Get to an appropriate specialist who is very experienced in these areas and look into what can be done to help, because a lot of times there are things that can be done. They're relatively easy to get done, and they can have a high impact on your symptoms and your quality of life."
Temple Health's website says that people suffering with asthma may notice that their symptoms are more severe during the winter, a result of the dry air and sudden changes in the weather conditions.
Respiratory illnesses can cause the airways to become swollen and irritated, which can set off asthma symptoms. A few simple strategies to combat asthma attacks brought on by cold weather are dressing warmly when you go outside, breathing through the nose as often as possible, using a humidifier, exercising indoors and staying hydrated.
Mayo Clinic's website says that people diagnosed with asthma also suffer from various forms of allergies, and as the body’s immune system fights off allergens, it releases chemicals that can spark a runny nose, decongestion and skin issues. Allergy treatments such as immunotherapy can reduce your body's reaction to allergens over time, which will in turn decrease asthma symptoms.
