Four Yale faculty members have been honored by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) with this year’s Graduate Mentor Awards for outstanding commitment to advising and student support. Sreeganga Chandra, Jennifer Allen, Marynel Vázquez, and Grace Kao were recognized for their dedication to mentoring graduate students at Yale University.

GSAS Dean Lynn Cooley commended the winners, stating, “The Graduate Mentor Awards recognize our faculty’s extraordinary commitment to fostering the intellectual and professional growth of Yale’s graduate students. Each of the recipients embodies the highest ideals of our academic community, inspiring both excellence and innovation among the next generation of scholars.”

The Graduate Mentor Awards, initiated in 2008 in collaboration with the Graduate Student Assembly, aim to acknowledge superb teaching, advising, and mentoring of graduate students. Students nominate faculty members for the award, with one recipient selected from each of the four divisions: biological sciences, humanities, physical sciences and engineering, and social sciences.

Sreeganga Chandra, in the field of Biological Sciences, was praised for her support and mentorship in the Chandra Lab. Students highlighted her rigorous feedback and high expectations, combined with generosity and approachability, which focused on their holistic development.

Jennifer Allen, recognized in the Humanities category, was commended for her deep commitment to pedagogy and intellectual generosity. Students credited her with shaping them into stronger writers, thinkers, and mentors through her dedication to their scholarly growth.

Marynel Vázquez, honored in Physical Sciences and Engineering, received accolades for her optimism and support of student research and teaching. Her dedication to professional development, coupled with kindness and patience, was highlighted by students appreciative of her guidance.

Grace Kao, distinguished in Social Sciences, was lauded for her dedication to students' professional development and interdisciplinary collaboration. She was praised for inspiring excitement for the field and the profession through her mentorship and encouragement.

The awards will be presented during the GSAS convocation on May 19, recognizing the exemplary mentorship provided by Sreeganga Chandra, Jennifer Allen, Marynel Vázquez, and Grace Kao to Yale's graduate student community.
