The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has elected two faculty members from Yale School of Medicine as new members. Dr. Erol Fikrig and Dr. Haifan Lin are among the 90 newly elected regular members, with an additional 10 international members.
Dr. Erol Fikrig holds multiple positions at Yale, including Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Medicine in Infectious Diseases and section chief for infectious disease in the Department of Internal Medicine. NAM acknowledged his work on “mechanistic studies that led to an FDA-approved outer surface protein A-based human Lyme disease vaccine." His research contributed to developing a strategy to prevent Lyme disease by inducing host resistance to tick bites.
Dr. Haifan Lin serves as Eugene Higgins Professor of Cell Biology and director of the Yale Stem Cell Center, among other roles. NAM recognized him "for making key contributions to the validation of two hallmark stem cell theories: asymmetric division and niche hypotheses." He is credited with discovering piRNAs, small noncoding RNAs, which established a new paradigm in genome regulation.
Election to NAM is regarded as one of the highest honors in health and medicine fields, recognizing outstanding professional achievement and service commitment. NAM President Victor J. Dzau stated, “This class of new members represents the most exceptional researchers and leaders in health and medicine.”
With this year's elections, NAM's membership exceeds 2,400 individuals. The organization was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences as the Institute of Medicine and collaborates with other national academies to provide independent analysis and advice on complex issues affecting public policy.
