Two Yale seniors and two recent alumni have been awarded the prestigious 2025 Rhodes Scholarships. The recipients include Sayda Martinez-Alvarado from Leesburg, Virginia, Angelin Mathew from Davie, Florida, Chriss Tuyishime from Rwanda, and Tony Wang from China. These scholarships are renowned for providing comprehensive funding for graduate study at the University of Oxford.
The Rhodes Trust announced on November 16 that Martinez-Alvarado and Mathew are among the 32 American winners this year. Tuyishime and Wang are part of the international group of scholars selected from various jurisdictions worldwide.
The Rhodes Scholarships were established in 1902 through the will of Cecil Rhodes. They aim to support outstanding students with academic excellence and a commitment to social impact. Ramona L. Doyle, American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust, emphasized that candidates must demonstrate "great promise of leadership and character as well as an exceptionally strong commitment to service."
Martinez-Alvarado graduated in 2023 with a major in psychology and has been working at EdTrust as a senior policy analyst for higher education. At Oxford, she plans to pursue an M.Sc. in education and evidence-based social intervention.
Mathew is a senior studying molecular biology and humanities at Yale. She has founded initiatives such as the Existential Flourishing Network and Forever Kin. Her focus at Oxford will be on an M.St. in the study of religions and an M.Sc. in medical anthropology.
Tuyishime is completing his degree in ethics, politics, and economics with a certificate in global health studies. He aims to pursue master's degrees in translational health sciences and public policy at Oxford.
Wang graduated with majors in Near Eastern languages and civilizations as well as history of art. He is currently pursuing a master's degree at Oxford while engaging in archaeological research focused on cultural preservation along the Silk Roads.
All four scholars will commence their studies at Oxford starting October 2025 across diverse fields.
