Peter Salovey, a prominent figure in the study of emotional intelligence and former president of Yale University, has been appointed as the Sterling Professor of Psychology. This title is recognized as the highest academic and professional honor at Yale. Salovey's appointment is retroactive to July 1, 2024.

Salovey recently concluded an 11-year term as Yale’s 23rd president. He has been named president emeritus and holds multiple secondary appointments across various departments, including management, epidemiology & public health, sociology, and more.

Salovey joined Yale's faculty in 1986 after earning his advanced degrees there. He also studied at Stanford University where he received an A.B. in psychology and a co-terminal M.A. in sociology.

Renowned for his work on emotional intelligence—a concept developed with John D. Mayer—Salovey has influenced both psychological research and clinical practice significantly over the years. His research extends into health communication, emphasizing how social psychological principles can encourage healthy behavior.

FAS Dean Tamar Gendler noted that “Salovey’s publications place him not only among the most highly cited faculty in his department but among the most highly cited faculty in his profession.” His work has reached global audiences, influencing various aspects of personal and professional life.

Dilson Rassier from McGill University praised Salovey’s work during an honorary degree ceremony: “By illuminating the rich, complex way that our minds integrate the rational and the emotional, Dr. Salovey has helped to show us who we truly are; a critical step in understanding ourselves and ultimately understanding each other.”

Throughout his career, Salovey has been recognized by numerous prestigious organizations for his contributions to research and higher education. He holds fellowships with several academies and honorary degrees from institutions like Harvard University.

In addition to academic achievements, Salovey's service includes roles on editorial boards of major journals, advisory committees for governmental bodies, and leadership positions within scholarly organizations. For these efforts, he received honors such as the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

His community involvement includes awards recognizing service to New Haven—where Yale is located—and participation on boards such as that of Stanford University.

As an educator at Yale, Salovey has taught thousands of students through popular courses like "Introduction to Psychology" and "Psychology and the Law." He received multiple teaching awards throughout his tenure at Yale.

During his presidency at Yale from 2013-2024, he launched initiatives enhancing science strategies at the university while making education accessible regardless of students' socioeconomic backgrounds.

Dean Gendler stated that “Salovey’s scholarship has transformed his field and lives,” acknowledging both his academic influence and community dedication which led to this esteemed professorship honor.
