Metabolic-associated steatolic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, is a condition that affects nearly one-third of adults in the United States and globally. It is the leading cause of liver transplantation and one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease worldwide. A subset of these patients has a more severe form of the disease, metabolic steatohepatitis (MASH – previously non-alcoholic steatohepatitis), which progresses rapidly towards end-stage liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.
