On May 7, 2024, Yale School of Medicine (YSM) held its annual Student Research Day (SRD), a tradition that has been upheld since 1988. The event saw five medical students present their theses and over 75 students from across Yale's health profession schools display scientific posters.

"Today we're showcasing a diverse range of mentored research—spanning from fundamental basic science to implementation science—performed by student investigators from across the health professions schools," said Sarwat Chaudhry, MD, Associate Dean for Student Research and professor of medicine. Erica Herzog, MD, PhD, John Slade Ely Professor of Medicine and professor of pathology, echoed this sentiment stating that they take "immense pride in Yale’s deep-rooted tradition of embedding research within medical education."

The event also included the Lee E. Farr MD Endowed Lectureship and the presentation of the Dr. John N. Forrest Jr., Mentorship Award. Nancy J. Brown, MD, introduced Peter Aronson, MD as the Farr lecturer and praised his qualities as a physician-scientist, educator, mentor, and colleague.

Aronson shared his academic journey in his lecture titled From Sugar to Salt to Stones: Serendipitous Journey as Mentee and Mentor. He emphasized the role of chance events and serendipitous research findings in shaping his career.

The event also honored the late John N. Forrest Jr., with Chaudhry introducing a mentorship award established in his name. Before announcing Shelli Farhadian, MD, PhD as the recipient of this award, Forrest’s son shared heartfelt messages received from those mentored by his father.

Upon receiving her award Farhadian expressed gratitude for being recognized in Dr. Forrest's name and shared her experiences with him when she was an intern at YSM.

The event concluded with student thesis presentations on various topics ranging from Medicaid coverage for undocumented children to the association between medical insurance, access to care, and clinical outcomes for patients with Uveal Melanoma in the United States.
