Yale University is set to convene thought leaders and organizations for a four-day summit in New York to discuss and advance solutions to the global climate threat. The event, scheduled from September 24 to 27 at the Yale Club of New York City, coincides with Climate Week NYC and a meeting of the UN General Assembly.

Hosted by Yale Planetary Solutions (YPS), an initiative aimed at addressing significant environmental threats, the summit will highlight various efforts within the university community focused on combating climate change and biodiversity loss.

The opening day on Tuesday, September 24 will be livestreamed and feature remarks from Yale President Maurie McInnis and Yale Provost Scott Strobel. Additionally, there will be a "fireside discussion" on climate leadership with former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry '66, who also served as the inaugural U.S. special envoy for climate.

Throughout the week, experts from diverse disciplines within Yale and beyond will cover timely climate-related topics. One notable session includes a conversation with Tom Steyer '79, an investor and business leader recognized for his advocacy in climate action over the past decade.

Julie Zimmerman, Yale’s inaugural vice provost for planetary solutions, commented on the event: "Our Yale @ Climate Week events provide an exciting opportunity for us to engage in this critical conversation with partners from throughout the region and around the world." She added that these events span various fields including science, engineering, social science, humanities, and arts.

Established in 2020, YPS fosters cross-disciplinary collaborations at Yale by combining technical innovations with new data tools for modeling and monitoring. It supports innovation through seed grants and programs for small-scale projects while encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations among faculty, students, and staff. These efforts underscore universities' unique role in addressing climate change.
