On October 27, 2024, Dr. Eric Winer conducted an interview with Dr. Veda Giri on Yale Cancer Answers. Dr. Giri is a Professor of Internal Medicine specializing in Medical Oncology and serves as the Division Chief of Clinical Cancer Genetics at Yale. She also directs the Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program and the Early Onset Cancer Program.
During the program, Dr. Giri discussed her research on genetic evaluation of cancer risk, disparities in access to genetic testing and counseling, and implementation research. She highlighted potential reasons for the increasing incidence of early onset cancers in individuals aged 18 to 49.
Dr. Giri noted that patients with early onset cancers face unique challenges due to their age group. These cancers are often more aggressive and may respond less effectively to treatment. Patients frequently have to cope with demanding treatment regimens while managing responsibilities such as parenthood, careers, caregiving for aging parents, and financial struggles.
"This population deserves dedicated efforts from multiple perspectives," Dr. Giri emphasized, "including clinical research, psychosocial services, and the best possible oncology care." She stressed the importance of knowing family history for early cancer screenings and guiding genetic testing to estimate cancer risk.
