Philipp Strack, a scholar recognized for his contributions to microeconomic theory, has been appointed as the Cowles Foundation Professor of Economics at Yale University. Strack joined Yale's Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 2019 after serving at the University of California, Berkeley.
Strack's work in microeconomic theory has led to significant advancements in behavioral economics. His research includes studies on mechanism design and decision-making, particularly in environments involving learning and information transmission. He has formalized concepts such as information cost functions and privacy notions to enhance their practical application. This research challenges existing theories and expands the understanding of decision-making and behavioral economics.
In acknowledgment of his influential scholarship, Strack received the 2024 John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic Association, an honor given to economists under 40. He also earned the 2023 Bodossaki Young Scientist Award, became a Fellow of the Econometric Society in 2022, and was awarded a Sloan Fellowship in 2019.
Strack has delivered invited lectures at prestigious institutions including Cambridge, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Stanford, and Princeton. His work is published in leading journals like Econometrica and American Economic Review.
At Yale, Strack serves on program committees for major conferences and as an associate editor for prominent economic journals. He has been the inaugural Director of Undergraduate Studies for Yale's Computer Science and Economics major since 2019 and co-directs the Cowles Foundation’s Theory program. His teaching covers topics such as economic theory, game theory, mechanism design, behavioral taxation, blockchain economics, among others.
Strack holds a Ph.D. in economics from the Bonn Graduate School of Economics.
