Abhishek Bhattacharjee, a prominent computer scientist known for his work in computer architectures and systems software, has been appointed as the A. Bartlett Giamatti Professor of Computer Science at Yale University. Bhattacharjee's research focuses on improving computer systems for high-performance servers in data centers and low-power embedded systems for brain-computer interfaces.
Bhattacharjee joined Yale's School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) in 2019 after serving as an associate professor at Rutgers University. Since then, he has made significant strides in advancing efficient memory management within computer systems, addressing what is often considered the primary performance bottleneck in modern computing.
His contributions to memory address translation have been instrumental in optimizing modern memory systems. This process, crucial for mapping virtual locations in software to physical locations in computers, facilitates easy programming and concurrent program execution. Bhattacharjee’s innovations have significantly influenced commercial systems by companies such as AMD, NVIDIA, RISC-V, Meta, and the Linux community. For these achievements, he was awarded the 2023 ACM SIGARCH Maurice Wilkes Award.
In addition to his work on memory systems, Bhattacharjee is developing next-generation brain-computer interfaces that aim to enhance communication between biological neurons and computer systems. His goal is to enable supercomputer-like performance on these devices with potential applications across various fields including vision, hearing, speech, motor control, navigation, and memory formation.
Beyond his research contributions, Bhattacharjee has played a vital role in revitalizing teaching within Yale's Department of Computer Science. He has developed core courses such as CPSC 323 (Introduction to Systems Programming & Computer Organization) and chaired the curriculum committee overseeing departmental restructuring efforts. In recognition of his teaching excellence and mentorship, he received the 2022 Yale SEAS Ackerman Award.
Bhattacharjee actively participates in several interdisciplinary initiatives at Yale including the Wu Tsai Institute and the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program. He also serves as an advisor across various academic disciplines.
Bhattacharjee holds a B.Eng degree from McGill University and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton University.
