The Institute of Sacred Music recently shone a spotlight on gospel music through an exuberant celebration at the College Street Music Hall, paying tribute to music legend Richard Smallwood. The event featured a star-studded cast of performers from across the country, including Mr. Smallwood himself.
During the event, several of Smallwood's iconic compositions were performed, such as "Total Praise," "The Center of My Joy," "Trust Me," and "I Love the Lord." Braxton Shelley, the director of the ISM's program in Music and the Black Church, served as the emcee, while conductor DeWayne Woods coordinated the musical performances on stage.
Guest artists like John Holiday, Karen Clark Sheard, Donald Lawrence, Tramaine Hawkins, BeBe Winans, the Walls Group, and Joseph Joubert graced the stage, captivating the audience with their performances. The atmosphere in the packed auditorium was electric, with each artist receiving cheers and demands for encores before exiting the stage.
The tribute to Richard Smallwood culminated in a heartfelt moment when the City of New Haven presented a proclamation in his honor, followed by words of appreciation from the music legend himself. The evening concluded with a powerful rendition of "Total Praise," uniting everyone in the auditorium in song.
Looking ahead, the Institute of Sacred Music will continue to showcase gospel music at the upcoming hymn festival, "All Creation Sings," in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The festival is scheduled for Sunday, May 5, at Woolsey Hall and is open to all members of the community.
