More than 75% of individuals aged 50 and older express a preference to remain in their homes and communities as they age, according to the AARP. This trend, referred to as "aging in place," offers benefits such as increased independence, comfort, and quality of life.

Experts from Yale School of Medicine provide insights for those planning to age at home rather than relocating to assisted living facilities or retirement homes.

Maura Singh, MD, assistant professor of medicine (geriatric medicine), emphasizes the importance of social connections. “Regular interactions with friends or family provide opportunities for physical activity and mental engagement and can promote emotional well-being,” Singh noted. She suggests virtual connections through phone calls or video chats when leaving home is challenging.

Barry Wu, MD, professor of medicine (geriatric medicine), highlights exercise as crucial. He shared his personal approach: “I call my 91-year-old mom daily to encourage her to ambulate using her walker at home.” He also advises caution against falls due to their impact on quality of life.

Snigdha Jain, MD, MHS, assistant professor of medicine (pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine), discusses barriers older adults face regarding physical activity post-hospitalization. “These barriers may be physical symptoms...or mental health symptoms...They may also be contextual barriers,” Jain explained. She recommends discussing these challenges with care providers for effective solutions.

Mary Tinetti, MD, Gladys Phillips Crofoot Professor of Medicine (Geriatrics) and co-creator of Patient Priorities Care, advises understanding personal health priorities when managing multiple chronic conditions. “To continue aging at home...understanding your health priorities will help you and your care team make the right decisions,” Tinetti stated.

The Department of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine is recognized nationally for its distinguished clinicians and educators within one of the top medical schools globally.
