On June 24, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement following the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade.
“One year ago, the activist conservative Supreme Court overturned nearly 50 years of precedent, disregarding science to strip away a woman’s fundamental and constitutional right to make her own healthcare decisions.
“To this date, at least 24 states have banned or heavily restricted access to abortions. And as predicted, stories are coming in from across the nation about women forced to travel to different states in order to obtain a procedure to save their lives. And what’s worse – this decision has worsened maternal mortality as women who face nonviable pregnancies are forced to carry them to term because doctors are prevented from administering lifesaving care for fear of being arrested or facing steep fines.
“The past year has made clear the goal of GOP lawmakers across the nation and here in Congress: a total ban on abortions across the nation. We see this clearly through their unscientific assault on access to mifepristone, a drug that is used in the majority of abortion procedures. Already they have used the courts to overturn the considered decision of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and strip women of yet another tool that allows them to make their own healthcare decisions.
“I am so proud of Connecticut, which has taken steps to protect the right to an abortion and has created sanctuary for those seeking one. We will continue to lead the way, but we cannot be complacent that protections will last forever.
“We must not accept a world in which women are held hostage by their geography – right now 22 million women and girls of reproductive age are. We must combat the GOP assault on the right to choose. I will continue to fight to enshrine abortion rights protections into law by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act.
“The majority of Americans support the right to choose, and I will fight alongside them to protect it.”
